Zaynab El Bernoussi, Associate Professor of Political Science at The Africa Institute, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Global South Award by the International Political Science Association (IPSA).

El Bernoussi will deliver her award lecture at the 28th IPSA World Congress of Political Science in Seoul, South Korea, on July 15, 2025, titled From the Global South to the World: Tracking Dignity Demands and the International Political Economy. The lecture will reflect on her research, focusing on dignity in political movements and offering alternative perspectives on international political economy from the Global South.

The Global South Award was established to recognize the work done by a scholar from the Global South whose scholarly contribution is focused on the relevant countries, regions, and themes. The award also recognizes a cumulative body of work. It was awarded for the first time at the 2009 IPSA World Congress of Political Science in Santiago, Chile.

El Bernoussi’s research has focused on the role of dignity in political uprisings, with a particular emphasis on Egypt’s 2011 revolution. Her work explores how protestors conceptualized dignity during the uprising and its continued influence on political movements. Additionally, her research in international political economy challenges Western-centric narratives, offering a critical view from the periphery of global politics.

At The Africa Institute, where research and teaching are aimed at addressing global perspectives on Africa and its diaspora, El Bernoussi’s work contributes to the Institute’s mission of promoting critical inquiry in African and global studies.

“I am deeply honored to receive the 2025 Global South Award. This recognition not only acknowledges my work but also highlights the importance of centering voices and perspectives from the Global South in political science. I look forward to sharing my research at the 28th IPSA World Congress and continuing to contribute to a more inclusive and diverse understanding of global political dynamics,” said El Bernoussi.

Zaynab El Bernoussi holds a Master in Finance from Instituto de Empresa, a Master of Public Administration from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in Political and Social Sciences from the Catholic University of Louvain. To read her full bio, click here.
