On October 24-25, 2024, Binyam Sisay Mendisu, Associate Dean and Professor of African Languages and Linguistics at The Africa Institute, participated in the tenth-anniversary celebration of the Africa Science Leadership Program (ASLP) at the University of Pretoria’s Future Africa campus. Professor Mendisu, an inaugural ASLP fellow from 2015 and now a steering committee member, joined nearly seventy fellows from across the continent to honor a decade of pioneering leadership in African science.
Reflecting on his experience, Professor Mendisu expressed his admiration for the program’s collaborative environment. “I’ve never felt so much energy and growth in such a short time,” he shared in a feature by Inclusive Innovation. He emphasized the dynamic interactions fostered between fellows and mentors, describing the ASLP workshop as “a world apart from typical academic sessions, with all connections grounded in our actual work.”
Launched through a partnership between the University of Pretoria and Inclusive Innovation, with support from the Robert Bosch Stiftung Foundation, ASLP has cultivated a transformative vision for African scientific leadership, empowering early- to mid-career academics across disciplines to drive impactful research and innovation.
Each ASLP cohort contributes to a growing legacy of influence, with fellows who emerge ready to lead, inspire, and address pressing global challenges. The program’s impact reaches beyond individual participants, fostering initiatives that empower Africa’s next generation of science leaders.
Professor Mendisu’s involvement in the ASLP reflects The Africa Institute’s commitment to connecting with researchers from Africa and its diaspora and advancing global knowledge of Africa and its diaspora, fostering scholarship that enriches our understanding of Africa’s place in a globally interconnected world.
