About The Africa Institute:

The AI is a newly-established, research-focused graduate studies institute and think tank. AI is established as a cultural and academic unique addition to the study of Africa and its diaspora, in addition to its unique emphasis on Afro-Arab historical relations and linkages. AI will contribute to advancing knowledge production about Africa and its people, their social, cultural and intellectual heritage and contributions to human civilization at large. This will be accomplished through research, teaching, and contribution to the development of related academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. The institute is working to develop degree programs at the Masters and Ph.D. levels, in relation to Africa and the emerging studies of the global African diaspora, in addition to special diploma in African languages. About the position:

The Communications & Outreach Manager (COM) will manage The Africa Institute’s digital and traditional communications and will work closely with the Digital Marketing Manager. The COM will work on expanding the Institute’s online presence, raising and maintaining the awareness of the Institute’s mission, and maintaining communication through our social media and channels. In addition, the COM is responsible for the Institute’s media planning and communications development. This position collaborates with all departments of the Institute to ensure the proper organization of communication, establish a consistent standard of messaging, achieve brand consistency and maintain a high standard of external communications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with members of local, regional and international mediaoutlets
  • Promptly respond to media inquiries and keep track of media coverage concerning the Institute, both in print and online
  • Communicate media alerts and press releases to target media outlets
  • Develop press releases for major announcements relating to the Institute
  • Liaise with the Institute’s media and design partners and ensure their offerings meet the requirements of the Institute
  • Provide editorial support to the Institute’s communication initiatives, campaigns and events as needed
  • Write, edit and proofread copy and image selection for The Africa Institute different digital platforms
  • Write, edit and proofread all outgoing messages and materials produced by the Institute, including the website and social media content
  • Provide analytical input to the website and all social media platforms content
  • Develop an optimal posting schedule, as part of an overall media plan
  • Work with relevant departments to ensure communication requirements are met
  • Ensure all communications are clear, consistent, accurate, and relevant to the audience
  • Work on The Africa Institute’s annual newsletter
  • Send out programming update newsletter to all staff when necessary
  • Other tasks as assigned

Required Education:

Bachelors and/or Masters degree in journalism, communications or other relevant fields with experience in marketing.

Required Experience:

  • 5-7 years of experience in a similar position.
  • Experience with the production of professional-quality digital materials.
  • Ability to create and deliver creative content (text, image, and preferably videos).
  • Experience in website management.
  • Good network with different media channels and outlets.
  • Excellent command of English.
  • Proficient in Arabic

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous experience in higher education institutions.
  • Experience with graphic design and marketing.
