Role Purpose: Online Kiswahili Instructor

 

Summary of the Position

GSU is seeking to hire a part-time online Kiswahili language instructor for its short-term courses under its African Languages and Translation program. The Kiswahili Online instructor will deliver engaging and interactive online Kiswahili language lessons to learners of varying proficiency levels in line with the program documents prepared by the institute. The ideal candidate will use innovative teaching methods and digital tools to create an effective and enjoyable learning environment. They will also assess learners’ progress and adapt teaching strategies to meet individual needs. The online classes are primarily scheduled after 4 PM (Gulf Standard Time) and/or on weekends, so availability during these times is required. About The Africa Institute, Global Studies University

The Africa Institute (GSU) is a globally oriented institution of research, documentation, study and teaching of Africa and its diaspora, in the humanities and social sciences. It is conceived as a research-based think-tank, and a postgraduate studies institution (offering both master’s and Ph.D. programs, and diplomas in African Languages and Translation), which aims to train a new generation of critical thinkers in African and African diaspora studies. The Africa Institute is proposed to be a model center of excellence in research, teaching, and documentation that is hoped to match in quality and breadth of coverage, existing peers of African and African Diaspora Studies in Africa, Europe, and North America. The Africa Institute is now integrated into the newly established Global Studies University (GSU) to form one of its networks of semi-independent institutes and colleges, each concentrating in different regions worldwide. Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver interactive, well-structured lessons tailored to varying proficiency levels
  • Incorporate cultural aspects of Kiswahili-speaking regions into lessons
  • Evaluate learners through quizzes and assignments
  • Provide constructive feedback and track learner progress
  • Foster a dynamic and inclusive virtual classroom environment
  • Encourage active participation and address individual learning needs
  • Collaborate with other instructors and the program coordinator to refine the curriculum
  • Integrate multimedia tools to enhance learning outcomes
  • Stay updated on best practices in language education

Required Education

  • MA degree in Kiswahili or relevant field including second language studies and language pedagogy, and formal training in language teaching (e.g. ACTFL, NCOLCTL, NARLC, or others)

Required Work Experience

  • Fluency in Kiswahili and strong English communication skills.
  • A minimum proven experience teaching Kiswahili for three years, preferably online, with knowledge of adult education strategies
  • Additional proficiency in Arabic would be an advantage

Key Competencies

  • Proficiency in online teaching platforms and integration of multimedia tools into lessons
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively
