The Lusaka Contemporary Art Center (LuCAC) hosted a workshop on the Political Economy of Inequality in Africa from August 14-15, 2024. Co-convened by Grieve Chelwa, Associate Professor of Political Economy at The Africa Institute, Global Studies University, Sharjah, and Professor Zachariah Mampilly from the City University of New York, the event aimed to build research skills among junior scholars, including advanced PhD students and early career academics.

The workshop, facilitated by the Program on African Social Research (PASR), focused on understanding the complex dynamics of inequality across the African continent. Participants included researchers from various disciplines such as gender studies, economics, political science, sociology, and cultural studies. The event drew attendees from countries including Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, South Africa, DR Congo, Kenya, Morocco, Somaliland, Ethiopia, the US, and India.

“We concluded an intensive two-day workshop convened by PASR and Lusaka Contemporary Art Centre (LuCAC) in Lusaka, Zambia. The workshop was inter-disciplinary and drew participants from a wide range of disciplines including gender studies, economics, economic history, political science, sociology, and cultural studies,” said Chelwa on X (formerly Twitter), who also serves on the board of PASR.

The event featured a keynote lecture by Dr. Dale Mudenda of the University of Zambia, who spoke on the link between trade liberalization and inequality in Africa. Other notable contributors included Dr. Mashekwa Maboshe, Dr. Cleopas Sambo, Dr. Malunga Syacumpi, Dr. Julius Kampembwa, and Ms. Victoria Phiri. The surprise visit of Professor Manenga Ndulo, marking his upcoming 50th anniversary of teaching economics at University of Zambia (UNZA), was a notable highlight.

Chelwa expressed his gratitude towards Professor Mampilly and Victor Mutelekesha, the founding director of LuCAC, for their roles in the success of the workshop. He praised LuCAC for its commitment to social justice through the arts and its excellent conference facilities.

This workshop is part of a series organized by PASR, aimed at fostering scholarly dialogue and research on African social issues.
