Zambian author Mubanga Kalimamukwento, a former fellow of the Tejumola Olaniyan Creative Writers-in-Residence Fellowship at The Africa Institute, Global Studies University, has introduced the Hope Prize in memory of her late mother, Rachael Hope Banda.

The Hope Prize, developed in partnership between Zambian literary magazine Ubwali and Lexington-based Shenandoah magazine, aims to honor outstanding Zambian prose and poetry. Each year, the prize awards $500 and publication in Shenandoah’s fall issue to a writer selected from submissions published in Ubwali Literary Magazine.

Kalimamukwento’s literary achievements include the upcoming publication of her debut collection, Obligations to the Wounded, by the University of Pittsburgh Press. Her notable recognitions encompass the 2024 Dru Heinz Literature Prize, the 2019 Dinaane Debut Fiction Award, and the 2019 Kalemba Short Story Prize.

Beyond her literary pursuits, Kalimamukwento will pursue a PhD in Feminist Studies at the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) this fall, furthering her exploration of gender themes in literature.
